Background

ISIS group roots are in the Sunni terror group called Al Qaeda which formed in 2004. At the time Osama Bin Laden was growing in popularity with Al Qaeda and was invited to join the terror group. Al Qaeda and Bin Laden were similar in which they were radical and ti western militant groups. There goals were to establish a independent Islamic state. They joined together two years later to form the well known ISIS.

Al Qaeda and ISIS Split up

In 2014 Al Qaeda disowned ISIS, because Al Qaeda was not radical enough. ISIS is the more brutal group, and they take over land including land in Syria.

A radical anti-western group whose goal is to maintain an Islamic state. They used extreme violence to get their message across. Their community spread rapidly as they captured territories on the Iraq and Syrian borders. And in 2014 th areas captured were considered a caliphate menaing a state governed by an Islamic leader. They took over places with many oil field because that meant more surces of income for them.

What is a caliphate?

A caliphate is the reign of a Muslim ruler. ISIS has a goal of restoring the caliphate, and giving the leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi the name of caliphate. Having a caliphate would give the Islamic state a greater attempt at political and theological legitimacy.
