Unit 2 The Age of Exploration and Trade 1400-1700

1420-Portugal begins mapping Coast of Africa- Henry was eager for Portugal to explore the world, Henry sailed along Africa's west coast mapping it's features.

1488- Dias of Portugal sails to Africa southern tip- in 1488 Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias became the first European mariner to round the southern tip of Africa.

1517- Luther writes 95 theses- Acting on his belief, Matin Luther wrote "The 95 Theses" a list of questions and propositions for debate. On October 31, 1517 Luther defiantly nailed a copy of his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Castle Church

1492- Columbus reaches the america's- On October 12, 1492,  Christopher Columbus discovered the America, Columbus led his three ships The Nina, The Pinta, and the Santa Maria. His objective was to sail west until he reached Asia where the riches of gold, pearls, and spice awaited.

1518- First enslaved Africans brought to the Americas- King Charles I of spain begins granting licenses to import enaslaved Africans to the Americas. The first shipload of enslaved Africans directly from Africa arrives in the West Indies, prior to this time Africans were brought to Europe first.

1520-Magellan Circumnavigates the world- Ferdinand Magellan was a portuguese explorer who organized the Spanish expedition to the East indies from 1519-1522.

1588- England Defeats the Spanish Armanda- The spanish Armanda was a fleet of ships sailing with the porpose to invade England. The Spanish armanda was a Spanish fleet of 130 ships that sailed from La Coruna in August 1588.

1609- Henry Hudson- Henry Hudson explores modern day New York and claims the Hudson river for the Dutch. He was an English sea explorer and navigator.

1630's- The first Puritans founded Plymoth- Plymouth colony first colonial settlement in New England.The settlers were a grou of about 100 Puritan separatist pilgrims.

1619- The First Dutch Ship Lands in India- The ship carried all types of spices to trade, it would take it to Asia.
