The Working Conditions & Child Labor Within The Daily Factory Work

You will learn about the working conditions and child labor that was a daily reoccurring issue within the factories. Within a word, the daily life of a factory worker is horrible! The workers had dangerous and unclean conditions, especially the meatpacking factories! Yuck!

😡 bad working conditions! 😡

There were many bad conditions that the workers were being forced to work in, some of them being:                                 ~Long days with minimum wages being paid                                          ~The machinery items were dangerous                                  ~Clothing items & hair got stuck in the machines                  ~There were also major injuries re-occurring over and          over again daily                                                                                        ~Cruel discipline (Frequent hitting with a leather strap. Other punishments included hanging iron weights around children's necks, hanging them from the roof in baskets, nailing children's ears to the table, and dowsing them in water butts to keep them awake.) http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/history/shp/britishsociety/livingworkingconditionsrev1.shtml

I understand that the video is bad quality and that there is no sound, but that doesn't mean that the information within the video isn't valid... because it is! This video gives facts about The Gilded Age and it truly tells you how bad the working conditions were.

This was the Steel Strike, which is also known as the Homestead Strike that took place in 1892.

Did you know?

Did you know...that there was a fight to end Child Labor, and their hard work paid off when children were outlawed from working? This is the reason you're allowed to go to school instead of working hard hours at work for just little pay that isn't enough or fair. http://www.history.com/topics/homestead-strike/videos/the-fight-to-end-child-labor

Some of the things wrong with child labor were:     ~They weren't getting fair pay for their work             ~They were working in dirty, dingy, and dangerous conditions                                                                         ~They were put in life risking situations (fixing machines) ~They were paid based on gender and age

This is a picture that tells a sad story. It was taken by Lewis Hine during the factory days. If you look at her hair one side has a braid and one side you can see that her hair is cut off/damaged or missing. The reason it is like this is because she got her hair stuck in a machine. By looking at her facial expressions you can see that she looks sad, depressed, scared, and exhausted.

This was previously stated in the "Bad working conditions" part, but it is important that we just had to repeat it:                                                                        "...Other punishments included hanging iron weights around children's necks, hanging them from the roof in baskets, nailing children's ears to the table, and dowsing them in water butts to keep them awake." http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/history/shp/britishsociety/livingworkingconditionsrev1.shtml

A Strike is an act of rebellion that workers take part in to make sure their demands will be met. Workers would strike for minimum wages, maximum hours, and safety.
