Therry sailed from Cork under a senior priest, Father Philip conolly in the Janus, which carried more than a hundred prisoners. They arrived in Sydney in May 1820.

Philip Connolly (1786-1839), was born in County Monaghan, Ireland. He arrived in Hobart in 1821 and was the first permanently appointed chaplain. his hardest role was to prepare convicted felons for death on the gallows. During his 18-year ministry, he was involved in many community organisations. in 1836 his priestly duties were withdrawn. Further troubles meant his health failed, and he died aged 53. The whole town went to his funeral.

Mary Mackillop
Mary Mackillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. Her parents were Flora and Alexander Mackillop. She was the eldest of eight children. At the age of 16 (1858) Mackillop began to work to support her younger siblings. In 1866, Mary Mackillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods opened the first free Catholic school. A year later, they formed a new religious order of nuns called the Sisters of St Joseph. Together they devoted to teaching the poor. Mary became the order's first sister and its leader. She was just 25 years old. Four years into starting Sisters of st Joseph, (1870) there was over 130 Sisters of st Joseph Mary MacKillop longed to help “the poorest of the poor” and to “never see a need without trying to do something about it”
