1861: The first shots of the Civil War were fired when president Abraham Lincoln sent ships to resupply Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. Confederate forces soon approached the fort and fired upon it, and the rebellion at Fort Sumter caused Lincoln to call for 75,000 volunteers to put it down. Resulting in more southern states to secede from the union (Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, etc.) and the dawn of a long war between the Union and the Confederates. (H/Snedic)
