History of EDUCATIONAL technology

Throughout the past years, technology has dramatically changed. There have been many positive and negative affects of the improvement of technology. Technology has helped education progress. In the classroom, it has been very beneficial as we will see throughout this timeline.  

1900-Present day

1900- Pencil

The first pencil was made in 1564, however they didn't start painting them until the 1900s. Also, they began using incense-cedar, which is a type of wood that is produced in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Pencils were used in the classroom to write down notes and practice problems. They are still used today in classrooms too.

Before erasers were invented on pencils, people used bread crumbs as erasers when they made a mistake.

1925- Film Projector

The film projector was used in the classroom to show students educational films. Teachers could pause

1930- Overhead Projector

The overhead projector was invented by Roger Appeldorn. It is a machine that projects the image of writing on clear film. Today, a lot of teachers use document readers instead.

1940- Ballpoint Pen

The ballpoint pen was invented by the Biro brothers. At first the pen relied on gravity for the ink to be pushed down toward the tip and having to hold the pen straight up. Soon after the ball at the tip was able to soak up the ink and be used without gravity. Today, a pen is a key writing utensil used in the classroom.

1950- Headphones

Headphones and audio tapes were installed in classrooms to help the children learn by repetition. They were mostly installed in language labs. Headphones are still being used today in classrooms with computers, tablets, and other mobile devices.  

1958- Television

Educational television began to be used in 1958. Over 50 channels were streamed across the country in classrooms. Teachers used the television as another way of teaching the children.

1970- Calculator

The calculator was invented at Texas Instruments by three men. When it first came out teachers feared it would not let children learn basic math skills. However, it has helped develop the calculator to what it is today.

1980- Personal Computer

These computers were placed in classrooms to help improve the education of children. During this time, most classrooms had only one computer, if not none. Nowadays, classrooms have a lot of computers.

1999- SmartBoard

The interactive whiteboard also known as a SmartBoard was first invented in 1999. This helps teachers get the children involved in classroom activities and make learning fun!

2007-Present Day- Tablets and Mobile Devices

Technology today has been improving exponentially and continues to improve rapidly. iPads and iPhones have created great opportunities for children to expand their education, but have there downsides too.
