Northern Colony (Massachusetts)

Massachusetts colony, a complete different story than southern colonies such as Virginia. This begins with the puritans. Based on the book Massachusetts (Thirteen Colonies) also written by Craig A. Doherty, many members of the Church of England who had been dissatisfied with it remained there and worked to reform it. They believed they were attempting to purify the manner in which the Church of England conducted its services. They were referred to as Puritans. Massachusetts was early on settled by families in 1630, led by John Winthrop. Winthrop joined the Massachusetts Bay Company as a partner by leveraging his personal resources and network. The company's goal was to establish a Puritan colony in and near Massachusetts Bay. People in Massachusetts were motivated by religious freedom, they were looking for a place where they could practice their religion freely.

Slavery in Massachusetts.

Slavery in this colony is a different story than Slavery in Virginia, one of the reasons why is because the origin of each colony, for example Massachusetts people just want religious freedom, that's why they don't depend as much as Virginia on slavery. Based on Massachusetts government website, most historians agree that the first African slaves came to Massachusetts in the 1630s, and that slavery became legal there in 1641. Slaves made up roughly 2.2 percent of the entire population of Massachusetts between 1755 and 1764, according to historians; they were mainly concentrated in industrial and seaside towns. This being completely different than Virginia, because they had almost 40% of slave population. Massachusetts Bay Colony was the first colony on the British mainland to legalize slavery in 1641.

Economy in Massachusetts.

Economy on the colonies depended mainly on where they were located, in this case, Massachusetts colony was located in a nice area, with good fisheries and good harbor. Their winters were long and cold. Based on History of Massachusetts website, by the middle of the eighteenth century, Massachusetts Bay Colony had developed into a prosperous settlement with a sizable commercial sector that sent fish, lumber, and agricultural goods to Europe. Massachusetts mostly subsistence farmers and fishermen. Also, since this colony was really dependent on religion, this influenced economy, because there were rules against exploitation in trade and land dealing based upon the Bible. There was inequality, but not near as the inequality in Virginia.
