Independent Party (1789-1797)

A voter who does not have long-standing loyalty to, or identification with, a political party. George Washington was a part of the independent party.

Federalist Party (1797-1801)

Believed the new central government, and the wealthy, well-educated classes, should be given the greatest possible amount of power in government. John Adams was a Federalist.

Anti-Federalist Party (1789-1801)

Anti-federalists believed that the vast majority of ordinary, less educated people, had the common sense and the skills required to run the new government. Thomas Jefferson was an Anti-federalist.

Democratic Party (1829-now)

Democrats are more liberal and stand up for immigrants, blue collar workers, women, and minorities. Andrew Jackson established the modern democratic party.

Whig Party (1841-1853)

The beliefs of the Whig Party were support of much of the American System, opposed to the growth of the executive power, and the Spoils System, and moral reforms. President William Harrison was part of this party.

National Union (1861-1869)

The National Union believed in national interest above sectional interests and states rights. It eventually merged as the Republican Party. Abraham Lincoln was part of the National Union party.

Republican Party (1869-now)

The republican party believes in a smaller federal government which places fever regulations on the people. They also believe in the states rights to make their own laws, based on the beliefs of their citizens.

Theodore Roosevelt was a Republican.

Libertarian Party (1971-now)

They belive in fiscal and conservation and social liberalism with a strong emphasis on individual liberty and responsibility. They also believe in free market economics, protection on private property, and the individuals right to perform any action which is peaceful and honest.

David Nolan was the founder of the Libertarian Party.

Constitution Party (1991-now)

The constitution party believes in limiting the federal government to it's expressed constitutional boundaries. It is an explicitly Christian party that believes the political rights of Americans ultimately derive from God.

The founder of this party was Darrell Lane Castle.

Green Party (2001-now)

The green party stands for social justice, environmentalism, and nonviolence. Howie Hawkins started the green party
