The Beginning of the War to the End.

Event-Cyrus the Great

Date-548 BCE

Summary-Cyrus was the founder of the Achaemenid empire. He united what is now Iran. Cyrus then began to expand his empire by conquering the surrounding land. He conquered Babylonian empire.  

Event-Darius I

Date-About 540 BCE

Summary-Darius is a successor of Cyrus. He continued to expand the empire. He believed he was a supreme god. Darius captured India to the east. He also captured Macedonia to the west, and the Greek island of Lemnos and Imbros.  Darius created one of the largest empire in the world. He had a lot of practices to control his army. He traded to get richer and stronger. The Persians trade route was called the Royal Road.

Event- Invasion attempt by Persia.

Date-492 BCE

Summary- King Darius sent men over the Aegean Sea. They had supplies on boats but they had trouble getting the boats to Greece. The sea was a great protection for Greece. The waves from the Aegean Sea destroyed the ships they tried to get to Greece.

Event- Another Invasion By Perisa.

Date-490 BCE.

Summary-King Darius sent ships and they landed on the city of Marathon. There was 10,000 Greeks vs 50,000 to 100,000 Persians. The Greeks won. Persia and Greece had a battle for control of Marathon. About 2,000 Greeks died and a couple of thousand Persians died. The Persians who survived ran to their boats and sailed back to Persia.

Event- The Persian Empire returned to Greece.

Date-480 BCE.

Summary- The reason that King Xerxes, the son of Darius wanted Marathon for the trade routes. They wanted the trade routes so they could get richer. The battle that King Xerxes commanded was also revenge for his father King Darius. King Xerxes conquered Marathon and took the trade routes.

Event-King Xerxes marched southward.

Date-About 480 BCE.

Summary- Persia took over more city-states. After the battle of Thermopylae King Xerxes conquered Athens and then burned down Athens. Most People were able to flee. He got richer from taking over them.

Event-Greeks lured Persians to a narrow channel.

Date-480 BCE

Summary-The Greeks knew that the speed and maneuverability of their ships, along with their knowledge of the waters, would give them an advantage. Greece won back Salamis.

Event- Greeks waits to attack.

Date- About 470 BCE.

Summary- Persia beat Greece at the battle of Platea.

Event-The end of the Persian war.

Date- About 468 BCE

Summary-The Persian empire withdrew. They withdrew because they were losing a lot of men at the fights. They were also discouraged from losing battles.  

Event- King Xerxes was drawn to the politics.

Date-465 BCE

Summary- The politics of his own empire's capital cities . It led to his assassination.

Event- Artaxerxes II

Date- About 404 BCE

Summary-Lost control of Egypt.

Event- Artaxerxes III

Date- 343 BCE.

Summary- Won Egypt back.

Event- Constant struggles left Persia for a open attack.

Date-330 BCE.

Summary-Alexander the Great overthrew the empire putting an end to the Achaemenian dynasty.
