What actually led to the outbreak of the bloodiest conflict in the history of North America and how did we rebuild our divided country?



Around 9 million people lived in the Southern states at the time of the Civil War. So therefore, the Union Army of 2,100,000 soldiers was nearly twice the size of the Confederate Army of 1,064,000.

Reconstruction

  • The rebuilding of the South after the Civil War is called the Reconstruction. The Reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1877
  • The Reconstruction Act of 1867 divided the South into five military districts ran by the army and President Andrew Johnson granted pardons to many Confederate leaders.
