The Constitution of Clarendon summoned a council to Clarendon, Wilts, the agreement attempted to clarify and settle issues with Thomas Becket. The Constitution required bishops to obey the King's rules and it showed to undemime the benefit of clergy. It also seemed to threaten the liberty of the church. Henry made this agreement to strip the Church of most of its power after Becket started to disagree with Henry and side with the Church. This act was condemned by Pope Alexander III.

1166-The Constitution is still causing arguments but Becket accepts it publicly, yet he never fulfils his commitment.
