Chapter 10: Jeffersonian Era

This a timeline of events from the early 1800s.

ES: I can explain some of the challenges America had as an emerging nation.

Timeline

Election of 1800 (1800): Jefferson and Burr run against Adams and Pickney. The vote was tied between Jefferson and Burr. The house voted and tied 35 times but they eventually settled on Jefferson.

Jefferson's presidential term(1800-1804): Jefferson during his term did lots of things for the country. He cut down military expenses, limited federal government workers, and his government got rid of most of the federal taxes. He also got rid of most of the national debt.

Marbury v. Madison (1803): Marbury wanted commission but they wouldn't give it to him because it was "unconstitutional". He was also mad because commission wasn't legal. John marshall established 3 principles of judicial review 1. the Constitution is the supreme law of the land; 2. he Constitution must be followed when there is a conflict with any other law 3. the judicial branch can declare laws unconstitutional. Louisiana Purchase (1803) Napoleon Bonaparte sold a large amount of land for 15 Million. Then, Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis & Clark to explore the land which ended up taking 2 years. There was another explorer, Zebulon Pike, who explored the southern part of the Purchase. He was arrested by the Spanish Army during his journey.

Embargo Act and Non-Intercourse Act (1807 and 1809) The British violated American neutral rights so jefferson made the embargo act. This act effected all trade with with foreign countries. In 1809 Jefferson changed the act to just effect the French and British this was known as the Non-Intercoure Act.

Conflict with Native Americans (around 1811): When Ohio was established as a state the people living there wanted to move past the Ohio River. This land was already occupied by the Native Americans. A Native American chief called Tecumseh acted as a leader for the Native American tribes and started rallying them at a place called "Prophetstown." With the tensions rising the Americans attacked Prophetstown and won the fight. The battle became known as the battle of Tippecanoe.

War of 1812  The war of 1812 happened because the British needed more sailors and supplies so they started to seize american ships. Madison did not like this so he declared war on the British, unbeknownst to him was the british stopped seizing ships during the same time. In the battles the americans won the Great Lakes. The British were heading to burn the White House but before they did Dolley Madison saved important documents and the painting of George Washington.

Battle at Ft. McHenry (1814) After burning down the Capitol and the White House, the British decided to not keep a hold on Washington D.C. Instead, they decided to head over to North Baltimore to seize the land. The people in Baltimore were strong and firm and were not going to try and lose their city. They were able to hold off their city since the british were still on their boats and the citizens fought from the land. Francis Scott Key, an attorney, watched over the battle and watched the Americans fight off the british. Thinking this was pure patriotism, he created the National Anthem that next morning. This is why the battle at Ft. McHenry is important.

Battle of New Orleans (1815): The War of 1812 had just been ended by the treaty of Ghent. But the word of the treaty had not reached the British and Americans yet. The British attacked the town of New Orleans but failed due to Andrew Jackson's strategy. Andrew Jackson went down as a hero that day and this was one of the reasons why he got support when running for president.

Treaty of Ghent & Effects of the War (1814 - 1815) The Americans and the British met in Ghent, Belgium, to sign The Treaty of Ghent. The Treaty of Ghent is a different kind of treaty. It was mainly made as a peace agreement but there's more to it. It was to make sure there were no more war after all of the conflict that had happen which includes the two nations burning each others buildings down. This was the outcome of the war of 1812.
