California Statehood

California was settled from the North by successive waves of arrivals during the last 10,000 years. It was one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in Pre Columbian North America.

1821-Mexico wins the war and becomes a independent nation

1826-Jedediah Smith explores routes of California. Smith believed there were lots of beavers in California. In 1826, he led a group of 15 trappers there. They were the first people from the United Stated to journey to California over land.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (gwah-dah-loop-ay ee-dahl-go), which brought an official end to the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) was signed on February 2, 1848, at Guadalupe Hidalgo, a city north of the capital where the Mexican government had fled with the advance of U.S. forces.

At the end of the war, the United States had gained the present day states of California, Nevada and Utah. California was the greatest prize. It was rich and varied territory with sunny climate, fertile soil and a long coastline and gold was soon discovered.

Soon after many people where wanting to travel and move to California to field for GOLD.
