California Statehood

California had a few events before becoming a state of the United States

Mexico (1821)

After 11 years of fighting against the Spanish for their independence, Mexico gains its independence.

The Bear Flag Revolt (1846)

The Bear Flag revolt was a revolt led by John Fremont. Fremont wanted Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo to acknowledge the rights of Americans so he took Vallejo as a prisoner. Fremont then declared California to be a republic and raised the new flag with a bear in Sonoma.

Mexican American War Begins (1846)

James K Polk announces a war with the Mexican government. Polk wants to get all the las from west coast becasue he believes it is their Manifest Destiny.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848)

The Mexican American War ended with the Treaty of Hidalgo. In the treaty, Mexico had to give up half of its land.

The Gold Rush( 1848-49)

The discovery of gold  happened in 1848, right after the signing of the hidalgo treaty. What this meant was people began to travel from the East Coast ot the West Coast in hopes of finding by the Sierra Nevada. Vast amounts of people began to arrive with their families in hope of finding riches.

Constitutional Convention (1849)

In 1849, a convention was set up in Monterey to discuss the statehood and governement that California will have. In this convention they discussed the size and the rights of the citizen in California.
