1754-1775 Timeline

1754-1763

Summary: In 1754, colonists began to expand westward, into French territory. When France heard this was happening, troops were sent over to fight the colonists. France allied with the Native Americans, in hopes to push colonists back, but in the end, Britain won the war.

Cause: British colonists expended into France's land.

Effect: Britain won (they had more money), claimed Frances land, and had a major war debt.

1763

Summary: In 1763, King George lll issued the Proclomation of 1763. This stated that no colonists could live west of the Appalachian Mountains, because that land belonged to Native Americans.

Cause: Native Americans were still a threat, so the proclomation was issued to keep them from attacking the colonists.

Effect: Britain lost majority of the land they won from the French and Indian War, but made a truce with the Native Americans saying that they would receive land west of the Appalachian Mountains of they leave colonists alone.

1764

Summary: The Sugar Act was a tax on sugar (hence the name Sugar Act). Colonists began to boycott sugar because they didn't want to pay the extra money for sugar.

Cause: French and Indian War debt

Effect: Colonists began boycotting sugar and smuggled Spanish sugar from Florida

1765

Summary: In 1765, the Stamp Act was passed. This put a tax on paper items, such as newspaper, envelopes, and paper.

Cause: French and Indian war debt (Sugar Act wasn't helping much)

Effect: Riots began and in 1766, the Act was repealed

1766

Summary: The Stamp Act was repealed, but on the same day, the Declaratory Act was passed. This gave Parliament the right to tax colonists.

Cause: Riots and rebellions from the Stamp Act

Effect: Colonists were outraged, and more riots, rebellions, and protests emerged

1767

Summary: Parliament passed the Townshend Act, which taxed some imported goods. Imported items such as lead, paper, and paints were taxed.

Cause: French and Indian War debt (other acts weren't going so great)

Effect: Tensions between colonists rose as more taxes were placed

1773

Summary: In 1773, the Tea Act was passed. Colonists couldn't buy any other tea than British tea, which was taxed.

Cause: French and Indian War debt (still)

Effect: Later that year, a group of colonists disguised themselves as Indians and dumped over 300 chests of tea off of a vessel (a.k.a Boston Tea Party)

1774

Summary: Parliament passed the Coercive Acts in 1774. These were a series of harsh laws that served as punishment for colonists' protests. The Quartering Act was also passed, which forced colonists to house British troops and fulfill their needs.

Cause: Colonists' riots, rebellions, and protests

Effect: Soon lead to the Battle of Lexington and Concord

1775

Summary: In 1775, the Battle of Lexington and Concord took place. This was a battle between British troops and colonists that took place in Massachusetts. Colonists won the battle.

Cause: British troops were sent to confiscate colonial weapons, but they came across a militia

Effect: Colonists won the battle, and this was the first battle in the American Revolution

1776

Summary: In 1776, we all know that the great DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE was written and signed. This stated that colonists wanted to separate from Great Britain, and was sent to King George lll.

Cause: Taxes and Acts were outrageous, and colonists wanted to become their own nation

Effect: King George lll didn't want this to happen, so more British troops were sent, and the American Revolution began
