Meso and South America spawned the creation of the brilliant Aztec, Inca and Maya civilizations, three of the most advanced and influential pre-Columbian cultures.
Each of these developed complex societies, with impressive urban areas, advanced scientific knowledge, unique cultural, religious, and technological achievements.
Think of the stepped terraces for growing crops in the Incan Andes, the impressive Mayan temple complex in Tikal, the mastery of water at Tenochtitlan..

✅ Why this matters today
Learning about the past can provide keys to understanding the present.
- How do civilizations develop and thrive?
- One of the possible reasons for the decline of the Mayans was changing climate patterns which brought about the end for a civilization thriving. Are there any lessons for us today as our climate changes because of global warming?
- The arrival of the Europeans brought about the end of the Aztecs and Incans and also exploitation of the people and the land. Does exploitation like this still exist today? If yes, in what shape or form?
- Central and South American culture today is a blend of customs inherited from the American and European civilizations. Quechua (the language of the Incas) and Mayan languages are still spoken alongside Spanish. Any other examples of cultural blending you can think of?
📖 The Timeline Format
There are many benefits to using timelines in a learning environment. For social studies and history study in particular, timelines are fantastic to chart events across different eras, providing a linear progression that aids understanding and the retention of information.
Timelines are more than just dates stacked up in a sequential order, they can (or should!) include context, facts, parallels with modern day events, a certain depth of knowledge that enables true understanding.
