The two tragic world wars of the 20th century were, and remain up to now, the largest military conflicts in human history. Both brought about much death and destruction, but at a different scale and magnitude.
What were the causes? How many nations were implicated and who were the main actors involved? How many casualties were there? Did you know there were genocides in both wars?
This timeline looks into the similarities and differences between both.

✅ Why this matters today
Learning about the past can provide keys to understanding the present.
- How does conflict emerge between nations and how can we use this information to stop future wars?
- The Armenian and Jewish genocides were a tragically low point for humanity. How did they come about? What were the steps that led to these happening? Understanding this can help us avert future genocides.
- After WWI, the punishing treaty of Versailles was partly to blame for the rise of fascism in Germany, which led to WWII breaking out in Europe. What does this teach us about how to manage relations between countries post-war?
- The UN, the EU, NATO were all institutions created post WWII that are still around today. Do they still have their use?
📖 The Timeline Format
There are many benefits to using timelines in a learning environment. For social studies and history study in particular, timelines are fantastic to chart events across different eras, providing a linear progression that aids understanding and the retention of information.
Timelines are more than just dates stacked up in a sequential order, they can (or should!) include context, facts, parallels with modern day events, a certain depth of knowledge that enables true understanding.
