Sutori was designed for teachers by teachers. Over the years, as the Sutori team gathered feedback from teachers and students, the timeline tool became essential for classrooms the world over, teachers taken by its simplicity, ease of use and compatibility with other tools.
Below we’ve shared some timeline activities and ideas for you by subject area for easy navigation. These will hopefully spark your teaching brain and give you some ideas for your next class 🙂

🪄 Simple & intuitive

When using tech in the classroom, as a teacher, you want the experience to be as seamless as possible for students. If signing up and classroom instructions are one thing (there’ll always be that one student that forgets their email or password!), another is to provide tech support for a learning tool. The less tech support we need to give, the better!
Sutori aims to be the best digital companion it can be, with a simple interface, a drag & drop and copy-paste type of experience that students are familiar with. Furthermore, sharing their work is a straightforward process done in a few clicks, the tool integrating with the likes of Google Classroom and Microsoft 365.

✍️ 3 timeline activities for social studies

  • The sequence - or chronology - of events
Understanding an event in the past always involves grasping the reasons that lead to it happening. Timelines have the advantage of showing in a clear way the sequence - or chronology - of events that lead to an event happening. The causes and consequences are more easily recognised in a timeline format.
  • Compare & contrast
History may not repeat itself, but parallels can certainly be made between events in the past and those unfolding in the present day. In a world adapting to climate change, what can we learn from past ecological disasters? What parallels can we draw between the rise of fascism in the 1930s in Europe and the rising vote share for the far-right in the 21st century? How does the history of a place where conflict exist today help understand the current situation?
  • Note-taking
It’s an activity that has many benefits for students. Not only does it keep students focused and engaged, it is also the first step to assimilating content. Indeed, the fact students are actively listening, while writing down and summarizing the essential helps them remember, acting as a useful preparation for future assessments.

  • Book reports
Reading comprehension is a key literacy goal for all age groups. Making students reflect on a novel they have had to read, by first remembering the order in which events occurred and then critiquing the book, works towards this goal. Sutori provides the perfect layout for this kind of assignment.
  • Creative writing
Creative writing can take many shapes in our digitalised 21st century. Sutori provides the perfect canvas for this, allowing you to add text, images, videos and all kinds of interactivity through polls, quizzes and embedded resources. Use the comment feature to provide a feedback loop or as a means for other students to engage in their work!
  • Biographies
What events in an author’s life lead to them writing great literature? A fundamental part of understanding a writer’s novel is to understand the context in which it was written, but also what in their life influenced them to write it in the first place.
