Timeline of rap

Rap is a type of popular music, originated by African Americans, in which words are recited rapidly and rhythmically over a prerecorded, typically electronic instrumental backing.

Rap music technically originated thousands of years ago in Africa, by village story tellers (called "griots"). The style of talking while music is playing is rap music as we know it in its root form.

DJ Cool Herc is best known for inventing hip hop on a turn table, but he also unknowingly created rap when he realized words needed to be put on music to keep the crowd live, so he invited his friend Coke La Rock to rap a bar: ” There’s not a man that can’t be thrown, not a horse that can’t be rode, a bull that can’t be stopped, there’s not a disco that I Coke La Rock can’t rock”.

  • Sugarhill Gang was the first group comprised of only rappers
  • Song was over 14 minutes long and used the “Good Times by Chic” sample in the background
  • Went on to achieve the top 40 billboard spot in 1980
