Which was the first founding culture of Mesoamerica?
The Olmec's settles around the Gulf of Mexico and were there from 1400 BCE until 100 BCE. However, the fall of the Olmec's is left unknown.
The Olmec's were nicknamed the rubber people and were known for creating art that was around for centuries, even using volcanic rock to create their sculptures.
Out of the theories mentioned: volcanic eruptions, strife, or a change in river flow, what do you think led to the disappearance of the Olmec's? Do you have a theory not mentioned, if so what is it?
The last Olmec site was called the Tres Zapotes which is now a museum in Mexico where scholars and tourist can go to learn more about the Olmec's.
After the decline of the Olmec's, the Mayan civilization, arose. They started in the Yucatan peninsula. Even though the soil around the peninsula was not suited for growing crops or providing needs for a civilizations, the Mayans managed to transform the area.
The Mayans built terraces to trap the silt from the rivers which allowed the empire to prosper.
Because much of the Mayan Empire split up into other empires (still Mayan), they often made enemies out of each other and were fighting.

The Mayan's empire grew corns, beans, squash, cassava (a starchy root), peppers, and cacao which is chocolate.

Not only were the Mayan's advanced in writing, but other subjects as well such as mathematics and cosmology. The Maya shaman's (priest) were the ones really specialized in these areas. This is because of the 3 calendars that were created and used for the Mayan's daily lives and rituals.
