An American spy plane was shot down by the Soviet Union. This caused a massive meeting between President Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

WHO
A CIA pilot by the name of Francis Gary Powers was shot by a USSR surface-to-air-missile with a longer range. This pilot was pronounced MIA.

WHAT
The U-2 incident was a harmless spy mission that was shot down deep in the Soviet Union. The pilot was a unarmed CIA agent doing only what was the right thing for the U.S.
WHEN
May 1st, 1960 a pilot by the name of Francis Gary Powers was pronounced MIA(Missing In Action). He survived and worked as a helicopter pilot for Los Angles TV. He died 1977.

Like the text above states, on May 1st 1960 our plane was shot down.
WHERE
The Russians did not want any spies in their countries but people saw a weird flying airplane in the air and found out it was a plane from America sent from the Americans.

WHY & HOW
The President wanted a closer look into Russia so he wanted planes to soar over Russia to see what the military was like.
Dwight did not want any person to know what they were doing and all of Soviet Union found out what they were doing.
