The Phoenicians were a polytheistic kingdom next to the Mediterranean Sea. They lived 3500 years ago (1500bc), in what is now Israel and Lebanon. They lived there 1000 years before their advanced culture was conquered by Alexander the Great. During many centuries they were the best at trading, ship building and sailing. Even after they disappeared, they left a mark on the world by inventing the first alphabet, the color Purpura now known as purple, and by surveying and mapping the Mediterranean Sea. As civilized people, Phoenicians were a monarchy based society in which the king was the most important person of four vasal kingdoms. They also had an organized religion in which the king was thought to be a descendant of their chief god Baal. The Phoenicians were very important because their abilities and knowledge helped them made great contributions to other civilizations, in this way, the Phoenician civilization helped shape the history of the ancient world
