Life in Medieval towns

Have you ever wondered what life in medieval towns was like?  Look no further!  Come explore how people like you or me would have lived in a medieval town.

Growth of towns

Towns started to grow for 2 main reasons:

  1. Agriculture: As serfs began to grow more food than they needed, they needed to get rid of it before it spoiled.  As people got more and better tools, they grew more and more food.
  2. Revival of Trade: Originally, manors produced everything they needed.  Then, as resources were produced more, people wanted to sell them to get more money.

Guilds

Originally, towns were centers of trade.  However, they eventually shifted into places where actual goods were made.  Trade and the production of goods were overseen by GUILDS.

Guilds would do the following:

  1. Provide help and protection for their members
  2. Collect dues from members
  3. Maintain high standards
  4. Control work hours
  5. Set fair prices
  6. Provide quality control

Why do you think guilds had a positive or negative influence on towns?

Trade and commerce

What brought most people to towns was business!  COMMERCE and trade made more people come to towns.

Forum

During the time period, people were "prejudiced" against the Jewish population.  Why do you think that people were prejudiced against someone of a different religion then them?  Do we still see that today?

homes and households

Homes were crowded.  Most people lived in small homes with many other families.

Disease and medical treatment

Towns were very dirty and unhealthy. Sewage and garbage were thrown into canals, streams, or  the streets. Rats were common since there was so much trash, cities employed rat catchers to help. Medieval doctors were rare and used bleeding and herbs as treatments. Many towns had no doctors and relied on barbers.
