Hamlet

Issues?  Hamlet has a few:

  • his father died unexpectedly while Hamlet was away at college
  • his mother remarried within a few weeks--to her brother-in-law!
  • his girlfriend inexplicably starts ignoring him
  • he isn't sure which friends he can trust
  • he isn't sure what his standing is as the future leader of Denmark....
  • and now....another crisis!

The ghost scene...

Story is set in Denmark in the 1100's.

Other places mentioned are Germany where Hamlet and Horatio had been at university, France where Laertes had been and returns in Act 1, England who owes Denmark tribute money, Norway who pays Denmark tribute money, and Poland.

Shakespeare's version is based on a Norse (Viking) legend, probably based somewhat on truth about a prince named Amneth.

Shakespeare would have seen a version by Thomas Kyd in 1589 in London.

Shakespeare's audience would have been somewhat familiar with the major plot points and characters, just as we are familiar with those aspects of any new version of Cinderella or Superman...

What is a director/actor choice that you found particularly interesting? Why? What effect did that interpretation have on the scene? the overall effect? the intention of the play? the relationship between characters?
