CAMBRIAN PERIOD

In this part of the Geologic timeline major animal

group fossils were found.

Cambrian Events

The Cambrian period went to 540 to 490 million years ago.  This period is known for the Cambrian Explosion, a small development in Earth's history. This event started about 561 million years ago. Major animal species began to show up according to fossil evidence.

The life in the Cambrian period started to grow as it went on. The Marine life population was a big part of the Cambrian period. These animals include echinoderm, trilobites, brachiopods, mollusks, and primitive graptolites.

Did you know?

This period was named after Cambria, a Roman name for whales.

This photo shows some life in the Cambrian period.

The supercontinent Rodinia broke apart, and by the mid Cambrian period there were two continents. Gondwana formed much of the land that is now Africa, Australia, South America, Antarctica, and a little of Asia. Laurentia was made up of land masses that are now North America and some of Europe.

This period happened between two ice ages, Proterozoic and the Ordovician.

The climate was usually cold, but it got warmer as the glaciers of the Proterozoic reduced in size.

There was a mass extinction of Trilobites and Nautiloids. At the end of the Cambrian period fifty percent of all animal families went extinct.

The reason I picked this time is because it is the first period. And I wanted to know what it was like in the beginning of when multi-celled organism appeared.
