The Winslow hotel were the Christmas family stayed with Eliza Winston.

Freedom for Eliza Winston

The Christmas family arrived in Minnesota. Eliza meet the Grey family. The Greys get a judge to help free Eliza. After Winston goes to custody the judge gets her her freedom. People throw rocks at Greys house but they can't find Winston. Winston gets her freedom and her whereabouts are unknown

November 1860

Abraham Lincoln elected


Only the northern states voted for Abraham Lincoln at the election in 1860. When Lincoln became the president the south felt it was the beginning of the end to slavery in the south. The south seceded from union became the confederacy Lincoln’s election was a turning point in history and the Civil War began.

July 21 1861

Battle of Bull Run


July 21 Charley writes to his mother and says he wants to go to battle. Charlie thinks the war isn't as bloody  as it really is. Charley got sick and didn't go to the war. 42 people died 34 missing 108 wounded

It was the bloodiest day in the nations history 26,000 men were killed or wounded Goddard wrote “if the horrors of war cannot be seen on this battle then they can’t be seen anywhere”  Goddard did not die but some of his friends did William smith died and Goddard gave his mom some of his hair

Emancipation proclamation 1862 In the beginning of the civil war most Minnesotans believed it was to preserve union but over time it became more than the union  The emancipation proclamation was announced on January 1 1863 declaring southern slave free The North realized that slaves wouldn’t be free until the Confederacy was defeated.The Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for the thirteenth amendment, which said slavery should not exist in the United States.

july 1-3, 1863

      Battle of gettysburg 1863

Charlie goes to battle and head first attacks with the other minnesota men Goddard gets shot in the arm and the leg after he recovers  Goddard goes home and meets his mother but four years later he dies of illness After the battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg address honoring the soldiers who died in the battle.

    Lee surrenders to grant 1865

Union marched to virginia pushed back confederate forces grant's army  the confederate surrounded army Grant tells lee to surrender and then he goes to lincoln and he surrenders Confederates surrender and men surrender The civil war ends
