1. During the 1700s and 1800s Texas belonged to France, Spain and Mexico. These countries gained and lost ownership through the years. Given all of the changes in ownership there was confusion with what to do with Louisiana. Louisiana Purchase occurred in 1803. Soon after the Mexican War of Independence happened between 1810-1812. This happened because Spain had to give up ownership of Texas to become part of Mexico.
Annexation of Texas to the U.S.
Texas wanted to become a state in the U.S. From 1836-1845 the U.S. was on the track to help Texas become a state. It started when the citizens of Texas decided they were not in favor of Mexicos rule over them.

2. In 1821 Mexico established rule over Texas and a couple of years later Texans decided to fight Mexican rule. Why? Because they didn't like the rules made by President Santa Anna. First, they started to rebel against the Mexican government and later the Texans battled against Mexico, and won! On March 6,1836 Mexican troops arrived at the Alamo to fight Texas colonists and Mexico won.

2. This is the Alamo were the Texas colonists and Mexican troops fought. Sadly, Mexico was victorious.
3. After Mexico defeated the Texas colonists at the Battle of the Alamo, the Texans didn't give up. With help from Sam Houston, there was a surprise attack on Mexico. The surprise attack was known as the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texans successfully captured Santa Anna. They did this so Mexico would give up ownership of them.

4. After the Battle of San Jacinto, the Texans finally got into the process to annex itself. At this time Texas was a republic. Texans voted and held annexation talks, but mostly failing to finalize an agreement with the U.S. for the next five years. President Polk ultimately approved the final agreement and secured the votes for Texas to become the 28th state.

Texas became the 28th state on December 16th, 1845.

In the 1700's and early 1800's, Texas belonged to France, Spain and Mexico. The three countries gave up ownership and got ownership of Texas and Louisiana. In 1803 the U.S. bought Louisiana.
