I think I'm stupid
Well, finally I gave in and bought an iPod shuffle, and all my geek-selfconfidence (honed through 17 years of programming computers) went straight to hell.
Apple's software is touted to be highly user-friendly, but alas, not to me.
For the life of me I can not figure out what the rules are and what will be written to the iPod and what not.
Most of the times I end up with just a couple songs out of the dozen of albums I'm trying to upload on the iPod. Or with nothing at all :)
And it seems to me that the first thing iTunes does is delete everything on the iPod, just in case.
I read the booklet, I read the online help, I even slept with the booklet under my pillow just in case I'll figure it out, but to no avail. So I gave it away
Maybe I got the french version ? Or am I too corrupt by so many years of using evil software ?

OMG, I totally agree. The preferences are so confusingly labelled, and the help so circuitous, I simply couldn't make it transfer files the way I wanted it to. What's even worse is trying to copy over your music and podcasts (along with your ratings and play counts) when you buy a new computer. It's a great little toy, but con-frickin-fusing.
Are you a Mac user? If not, you may be corrupted beyond repair. Sorry dude.
Just don't use automatic updating. I find it flakey as well. I just switch to manual and drag and drop. I find setting auto on podcasts work fine, but they really need to update the way it handles podcasts, I find it very kludgey. Can't speak for the Shuffle, but my video iPod is the most useful piece of tech I have right now (despite a few minor issues).
Hmmm, I have two shuffles - one for the car and one for my walk to work. I find them really easy. I agree, dropping and dragging is a must. I put a bunch of albums on it and then autofill the rest so I have a combo of selected tracks and random. Nice!
Your problem is simple: you have too much perceived knowledge to start with. I have never programmed anything more than a VCR and I found the whole iPOD experience great. Really easy and intuitive. I'm also a MAC user so that probably helps.
