Hardwood flooring beware

So, in a midst of a renovation. Timelines are tight. Moving date looms and the floor needs to go down. Floor boxes arrive, and luckily one plank falls out to reveal it's not the shade chosen.

Imagine if it had been installed as planned.

For some odd reason Hardwood Floor Centre, located on Weston Rd., Toronto, decided they would do their utmost to convince us we were overreacting and that it was the right order. Oh, the order was right...just the dye was wrong. We spent a week arguing but managed to convince a manager to come back and pick it all up.

Next we had to get reimbursed. Well, that was an uphill struggle. We had screaming telephone conversations. Even went into the showroom and had it out with the boss. But she wouldn't budge. Threatened us with the police...can you believe it! We didn't know what to do — called lawyers, Better Business Bureau...and VISA

Thankfully, we paid with VISA and they dealt with the issue. VISA covers all purchases and will reimburse if you return faulty product. (Not a lot of people know that.)

When buying hardwood. Always get a box of the batch you are purchasing for a final check in your house. The restocking is 10% normally...so on a $100 box it's worth it. That way you won't be worrying about a $5000 purchase.

Beware of Balanced Spectrum Lights!

Yes, these lights are not only functional but some of the models are even stylish & good-looking. I suppose they do offer the "outdoor" light spectrum that they advertise but I never bothered to really investigate that.

What the buyer should be aware of is that these lights cannot be repaired. If you are lucky to have a light fail during its warranty period, the company most usually will replace it for free. After that, you can change the lightbulb but that is it. Should the ballast fail, you will be out of luck as I was. The company flatly refused to do anything where the light was just two years old. Now I have $130 lamp that is totally useless.

It is really too bad companies do not stand behind their products these days.
